Graphic Organizers are structured writing activities that students complete after reading a book. Each module guides students through a different type of response — from mapping a story to comparing characters. When a student submits a module, it appears in your Graphic Organizer queue waiting for a grade. You assign a percentage, leave an optional comment, and either approve the submission or send it back for the student to redo.
How it works for students
- Students access Graphic Organizers from a book's activity page. They see a card for each module that is active in your program settings, along with a progress bar showing how many modules they have completed for that book.
- Each card reflects the current state of that module:
- No Taken — the student has not started this module yet.
- Waiting — the student submitted and is waiting for your grade.
- Redo — you sent it back with a non-passing grade; the student must resubmit.
- Grade: X% (green) — you approved the submission with that score.
- The available modules are:
- Story Map — Characters, Setting, Beginning, Middle, End.
- Compare and Contrast — two characters with unique traits and shared traits.
- 3-2-1 Nonfiction Fun — 3 things learned, 2 questions still remaining, 1 interesting thing.
- Nonfiction Book Report — Subject, Favorite Part, and up to 5 Interesting Facts.
- Draw It — a drawing with optional notes.
Modules must be enabled. Students only see the modules that you have turned on. If a student sees the message "Your teacher has not enabled any Graphic Organizers modules," go to Customize Program or the student's Student Group settings and enable the modules you want to use.
Step 1: Go to Graphic Organizer
- In the left sidebar, click Graphic Organizer.
- The page shows a card for every submission from your students. If there are submissions waiting to be graded, the sidebar displays a red badge with the count.
- Each card shows the book cover, a status badge, the student's avatar and name, the module name, and the date the student submitted.
- Status badges:
- Needs grade (red) — submitted and waiting for your review.
- Grade: X% (green) — already approved with that score.
- Student redo: X% (yellow) — sent back; the student needs to resubmit.
Step 2: Filter the submission list
- Use the filter panel at the top of the page to narrow down the list:
- Status — All, Pending, Graded, or Student Redo.
- Module — All, or a specific module (Story Map, Compare and Contrast, etc.).
- Select students — choose one or more students to see only their submissions.
- Filter mode (visible if you have groups) — switch between filtering by individual students or by group.
- Click Filter to apply. Click Skip to Results to jump past the filter panel directly to the submission cards.
Step 3: Grade a submission
- Click Grade now on any card with a Needs grade badge. The review page opens.
- The right side shows the student's full submission: module name, student name, group (if applicable), book title, submission date, and all the content they filled in.
- On the left side, fill in the grading form:
- Grade (%) — enter a number from 0 to 100. The page displays the student's minimum passing grade as a reference.
- Teacher comments — optional when approving; required if you send the submission back (see Step 4).
- Click Save. If the grade meets or exceeds the student's passing threshold, the submission is marked as Graded and the student can see their score.
Min passing grade. The passing threshold shown on the grading form comes from the student's individual settings — either their group settings or your global Customize Program settings. It may differ from student to student if you use groups.
Step 4: Send a submission back for redo
- If the submission does not meet your expectations, enter a grade below the passing threshold and add a comment explaining what needs to be improved.
- Click Save. The submission is sent back to the student with a Student Redo status and your comment.
- The student can read your feedback, revise their work, and resubmit. Once they resubmit, the card returns to your queue with a Needs grade badge.
Comment is required for redo. A non-passing grade alone does not trigger the redo flow. You must also enter a teacher comment — otherwise the student receives a low score with no guidance on what to fix.
Q: Where can I see all grades across the class, not just pending ones? A: Go to Reports in the left sidebar. The Graphic Organizers report shows all completed submissions with grades broken down by student.
Q: A student says they can't see the Graphic Organizer option on their book page. Why? A: Graphic Organizer modules must be enabled in Customize Program (or in the student's group settings). If no modules are active, the feature is hidden from students.
