By default, students can take Book Taco quizzes from anywhere — at home, on weekends, or outside school hours. The IP Block setting changes that: once enabled, quizzes are only accessible from the IP addresses you specify. This ensures students take quizzes under supervised, in-school conditions.
Quizzes only: IP Block restricts access to book quizzes only. Students can still log in and use all other Book Taco features — reading logs, activities, games — from any network.
Step 1: Go to the IP Block tab
- From your Teacher Dashboard, click Customize Program in the left sidebar.
- Click the IP Block tab.
- Your current IP address is displayed on the page. If you're setting this up from school, that's the address you'll want to add in the next step.
Important: You must add at least one IP address before you can turn the setting on. If you try to enable IP Block without any IPs saved, Book Taco will warn you and revert the toggle automatically.
Step 2: Add your school IP address
- Click Add IP. A modal opens with two options:
- Single IP — use this if your school has one fixed IP address. The field is pre-filled with your current IP. Confirm it's correct and click Save changes.
- Example:
25.271.4.52
- Example:
- IP Range — use this if your school uses a block of IP addresses (common in larger buildings or districts). Enter the first and last addresses in the range and click Save changes.
- Example:
25.271.4.52to25.271.4.142
- Example:
- The IP entry appears in the table. You can add multiple entries if your school has more than one network or building. Each row has Edit and Delete buttons.
Pro Tip: Not sure what IP address your school uses? Ask your school's network technician — they can confirm whether you have a single fixed IP or a range, and give you the exact values to enter.
Step 3: Enable the In-School Only setting
- Once your IP addresses are saved, turn on the Enable In-School Only Setting toggle at the top of the tab.
- The setting saves automatically. From this point on, students who try to take a quiz from outside the allowed IP addresses will be blocked.
Pro Tip: For stronger access control, combine IP Block with the Quiz Allowed Days setting in the Settings tab. IP Block restricts where quizzes can be taken; Quiz Allowed Days restricts when. Using both together prevents students from taking quizzes at home on any day, even during school hours when they may be absent.
Q: A student is at school but still can't access the quiz. What should I check? A: The student's device may be on a different network segment not covered by your saved IP range — for example, a guest Wi-Fi or a mobile data connection. Ask your network technician to verify which IP address that device is using and expand your range if needed.
Q: Can I disable IP Block temporarily without deleting my IP addresses? A: Yes. Simply turn off the Enable In-School Only Setting toggle. Your saved IP addresses remain in the table and the setting can be re-enabled at any time.
