Book Taco gives teachers two places to track how students are progressing: the Dashboard for a live class-wide overview, and the Reports section for detailed, filterable data on individual students. This article covers how to use both.
Step 1: Check the Dashboard for a quick overview
- Click Dashboard in the sidebar. The statistics cards at the bottom of the page show live class-wide totals: reading time logged, quizzes passed, pages read, word count, writing prompts, graphic organizers, badges, and more.
- These numbers update in real time as students complete activities and are useful for a daily at-a-glance check.
Step 2: Go to Reports
- Click Reports in the sidebar. The page shows a grid of report tiles — each tile opens a dedicated report with its own filters and data table.
- All reports share a common set of filters: date range, student(s), and — if you have Student Groups — a group selector and filter mode (by students or by groups). Apply filters and click Filter to load results.
Step 3: Use the Summary report
- The Summary report is the best starting point for a full picture of class performance. It shows one row per student with columns for: Passed Quizzes, Quiz Average, Vocab & Spelling, Writing Prompts, Graphic Organizers, Final Review, Pages, Word Count, and Activity Points.
- Additional filters: Category (All / Fiction / Nonfiction) and Grade.
- The totals above the table aggregate the selected results across the whole class.
How totals are counted: The Summary report counts a book only when the student has either passed the quiz or completed the final review. Reading Log entries are excluded from this calculation because students can enter data manually without validation. Each book is counted once even if the student has both.
Step 4: Use the Reading Log report
- The Reading Log report shows every reading session logged by your students. Each row includes the student name, book title, reading type (Stopwatch or Input), date, time read, and pages.
- Summary cards at the top show totals for: Input Time, Stopwatch Time, Total Time, and Total Pages Read. Two charts break down reading activity visually.
- Use the Reading Type filter to view only Stopwatch sessions, only manually entered sessions, or both.
Step 5: Use the Quiz report
- The Quiz report lists every quiz attempt with the student's score, book title, and whether they passed.
- Use the Filter by dropdown to show all attempts or only passed quizzes.
Step 6: Use the Book List Tracker
- The Book List Tracker shows which books from a specific list each student has completed. Select a list from the Book List dropdown — your own lists and any Super User lists are available.
- This report is useful for tracking assigned reading lists and monitoring completion at a glance.
Pro Tip: All reports can be filtered to a single student by selecting their name in the Student(s) field and clicking Filter. Use this when a parent or administrator asks for individual progress data.
