How to Set a Book Goal and Use the Override Pin

The Book Goal sets a reading target for your class, visible on your Dashboard. The Override Pin is a 1–4 character code you create and share in person with a student when they need one extra quiz attempt — either because they've used all their tries or because they want to retake a quiz they already passed. Both settings are in the Settings tab of Customize Program.

Step 1: Go to Customize Program

  • From your Teacher Dashboard, click Customize Program in the left sidebar.
  • The page opens on the Settings tab. Scroll down past the Quiz Settings fieldset to find Book Goal and Override Pin side by side.

Step 2: Set your Book Goal

  • In the Book Goal fieldset, type the number of books you want your class to reach as a reading target. The value must be greater than zero.
  • The setting saves automatically three seconds after you stop typing. No action is needed beyond entering the number.
  • Once saved, the goal appears on your Teacher Dashboard as the Reading Book Goal stat card.

Step 3: Set the Override Pin

  • In the Override Pin fieldset, type a PIN of 1 to 4 letters or numbers.
  • Click outside the field when done. The PIN saves automatically on blur.
  • Keep this PIN to yourself — you'll enter it directly on the student's device when they need an exception.
The PIN grants one attempt at a time. Each time the correct PIN is entered, the student receives exactly one additional try. It does not permanently remove the attempt limit.

Step 4: Use the Override Pin with a student

  • There are two situations where a student will need the Override Pin:
  • Student has used all their quiz attempts. When they open the quiz, Book Taco shows a Max Quiz Tries Reached screen with the message: "Enter Teacher's 4-characters Override Pin (found in Customize Program)." The student clicks Yes, Enter Pin, and you type the PIN on their device. They are granted one additional attempt.
  • Student already passed the quiz and wants to retake it. The quiz page shows a Congratulations! You have already passed the quiz. message and a Retake Quiz (Teacher Override Pin Required) button. The student clicks it, confirms they want to try again, and you enter the PIN. They receive one additional attempt.
Pro Tip: Because the PIN is entered on the student's screen, you don't need to share it with them — go to their desk and type it yourself. This keeps the PIN secure and prevents students from sharing it with each other.
Q: Can I change the Override Pin at any time?
A: Yes. Go back to Customize Program, update the PIN field, and click away to save. The new PIN takes effect immediately.
Q: Does the Book Goal apply per student or to the whole class?
A: The Book Goal is a single class-wide target displayed on your Dashboard. It is not set per student.
