How to Deactivate Clever Students in Book Taco

Created by Ace Turner, Modified on Tue, 12 May at 2:44 PM by Ace Turner

When your Book Taco account is connected to Clever, student rosters are managed by Clever — you cannot add or permanently delete students manually. Instead, Book Taco gives you a deactivate option: deactivated students disappear from your active count, freeing up a seat, but all their reading data stays safe. You can reactivate them at any time.

Step 1: Open My Class

In the left sidebar, click My Class. Your active students are listed in the Active Students tab.

Step 2: Deactivate a Single Student

Find the student in the Active Students table. In the Active column, click the toggle switch next to their name to flip it off. The student immediately moves to the Inactive Students tab.

Step 3: Deactivate Multiple Students at Once

To deactivate several students in one action:

  1. Check the box next to each student you want to deactivate. To select all, use the checkbox in the table header.
  2. The Bulk Deactivate button appears at the top of the table. Click it and confirm.

To deactivate every student currently visible in the table at once, use the Deactivate All Visible button in the filter row.

The deactivate toggle and bulk actions are only available for teachers who sign in through Clever. If you sign in directly to Book Taco, your roster is managed differently.

Finding and Reactivating Deactivated Students

Deactivated students appear in the Inactive Students tab on the My Class page. From there you have three options:

  • Reactivate one student — flip the toggle switch back on, or open the student's action dropdown and choose Reactivate student.
  • Reactivate selected — check the boxes for the students you want, then click Bulk Reactivate.
  • Reactivate all visible — click Activate All Visible in the filter row to bring every inactive student back at once.

What Happens to a Student's Data

Deactivating a student does not delete their data. All reading logs, quiz results, activity completions, coins, and badges are preserved and will be there when the student is reactivated.

Seat Overage Warning

If a Clever roster sync adds more students than your purchased seat count allows, Book Taco will show a warning when you open My Class. You can resolve it by deactivating students you no longer need, or by purchasing additional seats under Membership in the sidebar.

To pull in the latest roster changes from Clever, click Resync student rostering at the top of the My Class page. This button is only active when you are logged in through the Clever portal — if it appears grayed out, log out and re-enter Book Taco from your Clever Library.
