How to Use Student Groups to Organize Your Reading Classes in Book Taco

Student Groups help you organize students in flexible ways — by grade level, reading ability, project team, class period, or any other grouping that works for your classroom. Groups make it easy to filter assignments, reports, and activities, and can also help when managing multiple classes within a single teacher account.

Step 1: Add students to your class

  • Go to My Class from the left sidebar.
  • Click Add new student or Bulk students to enroll your students.
  • Fill in each student's first name, last name, username, and password as you normally would.
  • In the Student group dropdown, leave it blank for now — you'll assign groups after you've created them.
  • Click Save. The student is added to your class without a group assignment yet.
Pro Tip: Add all your students first, then create groups and assign them. This gives you a complete picture of your class before organizing into groups.

Step 2: Create student groups

  • From your Teacher Dashboard, click Student Groups in the left sidebar.
  • Click Add new group in the top-right corner.
  • Give your group a name that matches your purpose — for example, Period 1, Advanced Readers, Team Blue, or Grade 4.
  • Click Save. The group is created and ready to receive students.
  • Create as many groups as you need. There's no limit to how many groups you can have.
Note: Groups are optional and completely flexible. Use them however makes sense for your classroom — by class period, reading level, team assignment, grade, or any other organization you prefer.

Step 3: Assign students to groups

  • Go to My Class to view all your students.
  • Click the Actions button (three dots) next to any student's name.
  • Select Edit.
  • In the Student group dropdown, select the group you want to assign this student to.
  • Click Save. The student is now part of that group.
  • Repeat for other students. A student can only be in one group at a time.
Bulk Assign Tip: You can also use bulk upload to assign groups to students. Use your CSV file with columns: firstname, lastname, username, password, grade, group. Upload the file, and all students are added with their groups assigned automatically.

Step 4: Use groups to filter assignments

  • Go to Word Lists and select a list to assign.
  • On the assignment form, go to the Students step.
  • Use the Filter by group option to see only students in a specific group.
  • Select the students from that group and assign the word list to them.
  • Repeat for other groups if they need different assignments or schedules.
Note: You can assign the same word list to all groups, or create different assignments for each group. Groups give you the flexibility to manage assignments however you need.

Step 5: Monitor groups separately

  • Throughout Vocab Loco — in Reports, Writing Modules, and other features — you'll see filter options for Student group.
  • Use these filters to focus on one group at a time. For example, filter reports to see only one team's progress, or filter writing submissions by grade level.
  • This keeps your data organized and makes it easier to track different segments of your class.
Pro Tip: Print student login cards by group. Go to My Class, filter by group, then click Print Student Login Cards. You'll get a printout with only that group's login information.
Managing Multiple Classes in One Account?
Student Groups work well for organizing students within a single class in many different ways. If you teach multiple classes and want to keep them all in one account, groups can help you separate and manage each class. However, if you're managing many teachers or schools across different locations, consider upgrading to a Super User account. A Super User account lets you manage all your teachers and their students in one centralized dashboard, apply school-wide settings, and scale much more efficiently. This is especially useful for district administrators or schools with several teachers and classrooms. Learn more about Super User accounts.
Q: Can I move a student from one group to another?
A: Yes. Go to My Class, click the Actions button next to the student, select Edit, and change their group in the dropdown. Click Save to update.
Q: What happens if I delete a group?
A: If you delete a group, students assigned to that group are not deleted — they simply become unassigned. You can reassign them to another group or leave them unassigned if you prefer.
