Student seats are flexible slots in your Book Taco plan that you can assign and reassign as your class roster changes throughout the school year. When you purchase a plan with 20 seats, for example, you can have up to 20 active students at any time — but those seats are not permanently tied to specific students.
What are student seats?
A student seat represents one active student slot in your Book Taco subscription. Each seat allows one student to access Book Taco and track their reading. Your subscription plan includes a certain number of seats — for example, a plan might include 20, 30, or 50 seats depending on what you purchased.
- Seats are not assigned to specific students permanently. They are generic slots you fill as needed.
- You can have up to as many active students as you have seats at any given time.
- When a student leaves your class, that seat becomes available to assign to a new student.
- Seats persist for your entire subscription year — they don't reset monthly or with each class change.
How seat reassignment works
Example scenario:
You purchase a 20-seat plan on August 1st. You add 20 students from your class. All 20 seats are now in use.
In October, one student moves to a different school. You remove that student from Book Taco. This action frees up one seat.
In November, a new student enrolls in your class. You can immediately add this new student because you now have an available seat (the one freed when the previous student left).
Throughout the school year, seats remain available for reassignment as your roster changes.
Step 1: Adding students within your seat limit
- Go to My Class in the left sidebar.
- Click Add Student to add a new student to your class.
- If you have available seats, the student is added immediately.
- If all your seats are in use, you'll see an error message: "You do not have available seats to add more students." (See Purchasing Additional Seats below.)
- The number of active students in your class is displayed at the top of the My Class page.
Step 2: Removing a student to free a seat
- Go to My Class and find the student you want to remove.
- Click the student's row to open their profile, or use the Remove action if available in the row menu.
- Confirm the removal. The student is marked as inactive, and their seat becomes available.
- Important: Removing a student does not delete their reading history or data. You can reactivate them later if needed (contact support), and all their past records remain intact.
- Once removed, that freed seat can immediately be assigned to a new student.
Step 3: Purchasing additional seats
- If you need more students than your current seat count allows, you can upgrade at any time during your subscription.
- Go to Membership in the left sidebar.
- On the right card labeled "Seats upgrade", enter the number of additional seats you need.
- The price is calculated per additional student seat. For example, if your plan base is $30 and additional seats are $5 each, 10 additional seats cost $50.
- Click "Continue to Checkout" to complete the purchase.
- Your additional seats are active immediately after purchase, and you can add new students right away.
- Your total subscription expiration date remains the same — only your seat count increases.
Step 4: Viewing your seat usage
- Go to Membership to see your current subscription details.
- Your total seat count is shown on the left card under "Your current plan."
- Go to My Class to see how many seats you're currently using (displayed as the number of active students).
- Available seats = Your total seats minus your current active students.
Plan Ahead for Growth. If you expect enrollment to increase during the year, purchase additional seats before you hit your limit. This way, you won't be blocked from adding new students when they arrive.
Seats Are Flexible. You're not locked into using all your seats right away. If you purchase 20 seats but only have 15 students now, that's fine — the 5 unused seats remain available as your roster changes.
Q: If I remove a student in December, can I reactivate them in January? A: Yes, but it will use one of your available seats again.
Q: Do removed students' reading records disappear? A: No. When you remove a student, their data is preserved in your reports. You can still view their reading history even after they're inactive.
