How to Create a Vocabulary/Spelling Word List for a Book

You can create a vocabulary or spelling word list in Book Taco for books that don't already have one. Word lists help students master key vocabulary from the books they're reading. Once you submit your list, it goes through a review process and is usually approved within 24–48 hours.

Before you start

There are two important things to know:

1. Only for books without existing word lists

You can only create a word list for books that don't already have one. If a book already has a word list, you'll be able to view it, but you won't be able to create a new one for that title.

2. Paid plans only

Trial plan users cannot create word lists. You'll need a paid subscription to create and submit word lists.

How to create a word list

1. Log in to your Book Taco teacher account.
2. Go to Manage Books from your teacher dashboard.
3. Open the Book Search tab.
4. Search for the book you want to create a word list for.
5. Hover over the book cover.
6. If the book doesn't have a word list yet, you'll see a Words option with a + icon (the create option).
7. Click Words to open the word list builder.

Adding words to your list

In the word list builder, you'll add words one at a time. For each word, include:

• Word — The vocabulary or spelling word
• Definition — A clear, student-friendly definition of the word
• Sentence — An example sentence using the word in context
• Synonyms (optional) — Words with similar meanings
• Antonyms (optional) — Words with opposite meanings

The more complete your word entries are — especially the definitions and example sentences — the more helpful they'll be for students.

Add as many words as you want. There's no limit to how many words you can include in your list. Once you're done adding words, review your list to make sure everything is correct, then click Submit.

What happens after you submit

After you submit your word list:

1. Your list goes through a review process. The Book Taco team checks for accuracy, appropriate language, and quality.
2. You'll receive a notification when your list is approved.
3. Once approved, your word list becomes available for your students and all Book Taco users to use with that book.
4. The approval process usually takes 24–48 hours, though it can vary.

Tip: Focus on the most important vocabulary and spelling words from the book — the ones that are essential for comprehension or that students are likely to encounter again in other readings.

Note: Word lists are shared across all Book Taco users. Once your list is approved, other teachers and students will also be able to use it when reading the same book. This means high-quality word lists help your whole Book Taco community!
