When setting up student accounts in Book Taco, you'll need to create unique usernames and passwords for each student. There is no required format — the key is making usernames unique and easy for your school to manage, and choosing passwords that students can remember or easily retrieve.
Creating usernames
Each student must have a unique username. Your school can choose any format that works for your workflow. Here are two common approaches:
Option 1: Student ID numbers
Use the student's existing district or school ID number as the username. This works well if your students already know their ID numbers.
Example: Username: 5321678
Option 2: Name-based usernames
Create usernames using a variation of the student's first and last name, sometimes with a school-specific suffix. This approach is easy for students to recognize and remember.
Examples: Student: Emma Johnson Username: emmajohnsonMES
Creating passwords
Passwords can be determined by your school. We recommend keeping them simple and using something the student already knows, if possible. Here are some effective options:
- Existing school passwords or PINs — Use a password or PIN the student already has from your school system.
- Simple pattern-based passwords— Create a consistent format that's easy to remember
Examples: Password: Taco123 Password: Read2026 Password: (student's existing school PIN)
The goal is to make sure each password is something the student can remember or easily retrieve without writing it down in an insecure location.
Filling in the spreadsheet
Once you decide on your username and password format:
- Choose the username and password format your school will use.
- Fill the username and password columns in your student upload spreadsheet.
- Make sure every student has a unique username.
- Send the completed file back to us for processing.
If you need help deciding on a format or have questions about the upload process, contact your Book Taco support team.
