How to Export Writing Prompt and Graphic Organizer Submissions to PDF

Teachers can download a student’s Writing Prompt or Graphic Organizer submission as a PDF. The file includes the student’s work, book details, status, and — when available — the grade and teacher comments. Use it for conferences, portfolios, parent meetings, or keeping a printed record of student writing.

What’s included: The PDF shows the student name, submission date, book title, status, grade (if graded), the student’s work, and any teacher comments you’ve added. Writing Prompt PDFs include the prompt text; Graphic Organizer PDFs include the module content (for Draw It, the drawing image and notes are included when available).

Step 1: Open Writing Prompts or Graphic Organizer

  • From your Teacher Dashboard, click Writing Prompts or Graphic Organizer in the left sidebar.
  • Find the submission you want to export. You can filter by student, status, or other options on the page to narrow the list.
Pro Tip: You can also export from Manage Grades. Open the Actions menu for a Writing Prompt or Graphic Organizer row and choose Export to PDF.

Step 2: Open the student submission

  • On the submission card or table row, click the action button for that student:

    • Grade now — opens a submission that still needs a grade
    • View graded / Graded — opens a submission you already graded
    • Waiting student / View redo — opens a submission sent back for redo
  • You’ll land on the review page for that submission.
Important: Export is available for both graded and ungraded submissions. You do not need to enter a grade before downloading the PDF.

Step 3: Export to PDF

  • On the review page, click Export to PDF.
  • Your browser downloads a PDF file named after the student (for example, Jane-Doe-writing-prompt.pdf or Jane-Doe-graphic-organizer.pdf).
  • Open the file to print it, attach it to an email, or save it for your records.

Pro Tip: If you’ve already added a grade or teacher comments, export again after saving — the PDF reflects the latest status, grade, and comments on that submission.
Graphic Organizer modules: PDF export is available for Draw It, Story Map, Compare and Contrast, 3-2-1 Nonfiction Fun, and Nonfiction Book Report. If a module does not support export, Book Taco will show an error message instead of downloading a file.
Q: Where is the Export to PDF button?
A: On the Writing Prompt or Graphic Organizer review page, next to the student submission. You can also find Export to PDF in the Actions menu on Manage Grades for those activity types.
Q: Can students export their own Writing Prompt or Graphic Organizer to PDF?
A: No. PDF export is a teacher tool. Students submit their work in Book Taco; teachers download the PDF from the review or grades screen.
